The Renaissance also ushered into
Europe the Golden Age of the absolute rulers. Since we live in
a democracy, we tend to see absolute rulers as always being a
bad thing...because the people have no say in running the government.
But, some of the absolute rulers were very good leaders...and
some were stinkers!....and Ivan the Terrible was nuts! Having
a democracy certainly doesn't guarantee that you're going to
get good leaders, but the philosophers of the Enlightenment all
argued for more rights for the people...and against the absolute
rulers. |
